About Akurium

Akurium is a digital showcase for collections of things — just about any things: big, small, obscure, obvious. Musical instruments. Vintage tools. Cameras. Stamps. Figurines. Books. Knives. Toys. Rocks. Oddities. Artifacts. Whatever you want to show, if it helps tell your story.

It's meant to be a space for considered collecting, for showing your stuff without apology, and for seeing what other people care about.

What's in a name?

The word Akurium came about on reflection of the acquisition and subsequent curation of the items in a person's collections. And, yes, although it wasn't part of the original intent, the name just so happens to sound like "aquarium", and here we are staring into things behind glass. But that's just a coincidental and convenient side effect — the real root (and heart) of Akurium are the words "curation" and "curiosity", with the Latin suffix "-rium", meaning "place for".

Why This Exists

Most social media platforms aren't built solely for curation and display. They're designed for quick posts, advertising, and endless feeds.

Akurium is deliberately slower. More considered. Focused on the objects we've collected, why we keep them, and what they reveal about us.

This isn't another website for buying and selling stuff. It's show and tell, all grown up.

How It Works

You create collections and fill them with photos and descriptions of your items, and the stories behind them. Each collection can have its own theme or purpose. You can make it public for anyone to see, share it with a few people, or just keep it private, for your eyes only.

It's easy and fun to use (especially for you dedicated collectors and archivist types!). Set up a collection, add items with photos and text and publish. The hardest part will be making sure you took the pictures just they way you want them.

What's Allowed

We aim for a PG-13 kind of vibe here, with clear warnings when content might go further.

We get that curation is personal, and your collections may occassionally include mature topics — things like body art, vintage erotica, knives, or historical firearms — but they need to be labeled as mature. No porn. No gore. No hate. No harassment. No spam. Think of it like a museum that may have a "parental advisory" on certain exhibits.

Who's Behind It

Akurium is built and maintained by a sole web developer in New England. There's no marketing department or VC-funded roadmap here. Just an idea and some hope about what this space can be. And code. A lot of code.

But you're a part of it too: moderation happens through community reporting, some automation, and hands-on review. It’s not perfect, but the goal is clear: balance openness with decency.
