Frequently Asked Questions

What is Akurium?

Akurium is a place to organize and showcase collections of almost anything. Create collections, add items with photos and descriptions, and tell the stories behind the things you keep.

You can learn more about the idea and the person behind it on the About Akurium page.

Is Akurium a marketplace?

No. Akurium is about curation and show-and-tell, not buying and selling. It's a place to appreciate collections rather than turn every object into a transaction — there's already plenty of that on the web!

Is Akurium free?

Yes. Anyone can create a free account and publish a collection. Akurium does cost money to host and maintain, so optional subscriptions provide room for more collections, items, and images, along with additional features.

Some community features are reserved for subscribers in order to discourage spam, bots, and abuse from guests and free accounts.

Which subscription plan should I choose?

The Free plan is a good place to begin. Hobbyist provides more room and community features; Collector adds tools such as private collections, importing, and video embeds; Archivist is intended for large or detailed collections.

The plans page has the current limits, prices, and features.

Can I keep a collection private?

Yes, on plans that include private collections. Draft and private content is visible only to its owner; published content can appear on your profile and elsewhere around Akurium.

What kinds of collections are allowed?

Almost anything, provided it follows the Community Guidelines. Mature or sensitive collections must be labeled appropriately. Pornography, graphic gore, hate, harassment, illegal content, and spam are not allowed.

Your use of Akurium is also governed by the Terms of Service.

Who owns the content I upload?

You retain ownership of your photos, writing, and other content. By uploading it, you give Akurium permission to store and display it as needed to operate the service. See the Terms of Service for the full details.

Does Akurium sell my personal information?

No. Akurium does not sell your information or use third-party advertising trackers. Basic account, usage, and technical data may be collected to run the service, prevent abuse, and improve the experience, but your information is not shared or sold.

The Privacy Policy explains what is collected, how it is used, and the choices available to you.

Can I import or export my collection data?

Importing and export options are available on certain subscription plans. The exact formats and capabilities depend on the plan; current details are listed on the plans page.

Is Akurium available in languages other than English?

Not yet. Akurium has to start small, but internationalization is planned if the site gains traction. The first languages added will be guided by community requests and the languages most useful to Akurium's members.

Does Akurium have dark mode?

Parts of Akurium are already built with dark mode in mind, but the full interface isn't ready for primetime (nighttime?). Implementing it isn't especially difficult—it's simply a very thorough and time-consuming job. Patience, fellow night owls.

Who made all those funky illustrations all over the site?

Aren't those cool?! I'm not sure, and I wish I knew! But they're made by a very talented artist with the handle drawlab19, and licensed from Adobe Stock.

Who runs Akurium?

Akurium is independently built and maintained by a sole web developer in New England. There's no large company or VC-funded team behind it—just a carefully growing project, its community, and quite a bit of code.

There's more of the story on the About Akurium page.

How can I report inappropriate content or get help?

Collections and items include a Report option for content concerns. The Community Guidelines explain what belongs on Akurium and how moderation works.
