1970s Cortley Jumbo (Japanese Gibson J-200 copy)

1970s Cortley Jumbo (Japanese Gibson J-200 copy)

It's probably pretty obvious by now but I have a soft spot for these Japanese knock-offs from the 1970's . . . when I was a kid, I would scan the classified ads in the Washington Post and dream about buying an actual Les Paul, which were going for like $500 used at the time.  The Jap guitars were much more accessible; and, as illustrated by this exemplar, pretty solid in their own right.

This guitar has a great, lush voice - especially if you tune it down a step (DGCFAD). In that tuning, it has an almost piano-like richness to it.

It has a ton of cool features like a neck volute, open-book headstock, Gibson rip-off inlays on the peghead and fretboard, birds-eye maple back and sides, bat-wing bridge with inlay, nice spruce grain on the top (plywood of course).  Most importantly, the build quality and feel are excellent and did I mention it sounds beautiful?

These were imported by a couple of music stores in the 1970's.  I believe Gibson's lawyers sent out some strongly worded letters and put a stop to that.

I changed the tuners to Grovers, installed ebony pegs in the bridge, and added the Fishman soundhole pickup.
